The Golden Retriever

The Golden retriever is called a sporting dog or a Group 1 dog according to the CKC or AKC.  They are a super breed who is very versatile and active.  They love their people and especially love children.  Goldens excel in any type of therapy or service work.  They do not do well staying in the backyard with a toy all by themselves.  The golden retriever is a very social breed.

They are not meant to be a couch potatoe and need lots of exercise. They were originally bred to retrieve water foul and upland foul so they love the field and usually excel at bird retrieval.  They are generally easy to train and do not tire when asked to do the same task over and over.  They are very easy to please and they want to please their human all the time.

Many people think that when you get a golden retriever you really don't have to do much training with it.  This is not true.  Even though they are a relatively "easy" breed, they still need to be taught what is right and what is wrong.  Don't expect to buy a golden and leave them to their own devices.  This could turn disastrous.

Goldens also shed a lot.  If you don't like dog hair in every aspect of your life, don't get a golden!  They shed constantly and it only gets worse in the spring and Fall. They need to be groomed regularly to prevent matts from forming and hot spots from developing.  If you don't want to contend with grooming a golden don't get one!
If you don't want to take care of the long hair then get a Labrador retriever.  A Golden's fur that is not maintained only adds to problems for the golden.  Their skin needs to breathe and if there are matts and hot spots that can lead to major irritation and in some instances horrible infections. To watch a video on the oldens click here
